What roles do managers play?
They work with people in an organization to achieve objectives, by effective decision making & coordinating resources. Also depending on what level of management they are in will depend upon the amount of responsibility and authority required to do the job.
The roles managers play are Interpersonal, Informational, Decision making.
Interpersonal- greeting departmental visitors, attending meetings, representing the company, being on community boards, motivating, encouraging, supporting associates, building morale.
Informational-attending professional meetings, learning about new changes. They need to send reports and information to associates & others. Representing the department @ weekly meetings, and speaking on behalf of your staff.
Decision-Introduce new equipment, encouraging improved methods, taking risks, resolving associate conflicts. Decide which associates will receive the new equipment and which will get overtime. Dealing with difficult customers.
Skills for effective management.
comceptual-havig the ability to acquire, analyze and interpret information in a logical manner. Managers need to understand the environment in which they operate.
Human Relations-they need to have the ability to understand people as well as how they interact with them. Skills are needed because it involves communicating, motivating, leading, coaching, empowering, an facilitating employees as well as others.
Administative-these skills permit the managers to use their other skills effectively in performing managerial functions. The skills include the ability to establish and follow policies and procedures.
Current trends
Emphasizing team performance. They seek to equip employees to function on their own, less direct supervision is required. Work with teams which the team make suggestions for improvement to make things run smoothly and effectively.
Coping with exploding technology- computers have become a very powerful tool in the workforce. The technology has displaced thousands of workers who have used different skills in different areas. Computer technology continue to revolutionize how organizations function.
Improving ethical behavior-The recent downfall of some major corporations such as Enron has dramatically called attention to the issue of ethics. Most of these are from the behaviors of upper management. The vulnerability of organizations to ethical misdeeds were clearly exposed. It raised the ethics bar for all employees and management for a wide range of issues. Not just financially but to include accuracy an truthfulness in reporting results.
Coca Cola-Improving the quality of life in the communities where they operate is an integral part of their business. They strive in the community to make things environmentally safe from possible hazards. You can find several places where they market their product which is a soft drink. TV ads, specials in the newspaper such as buy 4 for $10.
Toyota-To attract and maintain customers to keep buying their product which is a car, truck, suv.
They to have promotions in the newspaper, you can also go to their website. They strive to keep people coming back to buy their product rather than say Honda. You have to have competitive pricing.
Verizon-Outstanding customer satisfaction. Offering outstanding products for the money. Having a good network for your telephone service which is what their product is. They can offer unlimited texting, roll over minutes, having a customer sign a 2year contract with alot of bells and whistles for their money.
Enron, worldcom, motorola.
